Distributed Software Development for JIRA

JIRA MultiSite combines JIRA's flexible and easy to use bug tracking, issue tracking, and project management solution, with WANdisco's active-active replication technology to turn a JIRA central server implementation into a distributed, enterprise ready application lifecycle management solution.

How WANdisco Alleviates the JIRA Re-indexing Problem

One of the challenges many JIRA implementations face is the administrative overhead and downtime required for re-indexing, sometimes referred to as rebalancing, or index optimization. Re-indexing is required on a regular basis to maintain acceptable levels of performance.

With a standard single server JIRA implementation, user access has to be suspended during re-indexing. This is necessary in order to avoid locking and database corruption problems that can occur when users attempt to perform updates while re-indexing is taking place. In a large implementation this often takes 4 to 6 hours on a daily basis. Full 24X7 operation is impossible.

With either JIRA MultiSite or JIRA Clustering, there's no need to disrupt user access during re-indexing, or any other maintenance procedure. The automated failover and recovery features built into these solutions, along with their unique shared nothing architecture, allow users to access other servers while re-indexing, or any other maintenance procedures are performed. Once re-indexing is complete, the server comes back online and resynchronizes automatically with the other servers in the JIRA Clustering or JIRA MultiSite implementation.

What is JIRA MultiSite?

JIRA MultiSite combines JIRA's flexible and easy to use bug tracking, issue tracking, and project management solution, with WANdisco's active-active replication capabilities. JIRA MultiSite can be implemented standalone, or in conjunction with WANdisco's multi-site solutions for Subversion and CVS to provide a complete, enterprise ready ALM solution, with built-in reliability and scalability, and no single point of failure. With this powerful combination, distributed development teams collaborate at LAN-speed over the WAN, instead of working in isolation. This means that problems are detected and resolved as they occur, so there's less QA and rework. Development cycles are shortened, resulting in major cost savings.

Features You Get Everywhere With JIRA MultiSite

Immediate Visibility to Organize, Track and Manage Across All Sites
JIRA MultiSite's dashboard provides immediate visibility into individual issue and overall project status across all development sites. When JIRA MultiSite is implemented in conjunction with WANdisco for CVS or Subversion, a commit done at any one site is immediately replicated to other sites' repositories, and associated with a project task or issue logged in JIRA. Project managers can see the actual time required to complete a task, or resolve an issue down to the minute, based on checkout and checkin times.
Issue Creation
Create tasks, bug reports, enhancement requests, support tickets, and issues. Anything entered into JIRA MultiSite at one site, is immediately replicated to JIRA MultiSite installations at other sites using WANdisco's unique active-active replication capability. Attach files and screenshots to issues entered in JIRA MultiSite and they get replicated too.
Workflow
JIRA MultiSite's approval-based workflow consistently enforces adherence to development procedures across all sites. Email alerts and RSS feeds can be configured to notify users of any changes that effect them.
Access Control
Fine-grained role based access control at the individual user and project team levels can be defined. Once access control is configured, it's replicated to all other sites, as are any future changes.
Extensibility and Integration
Using JIRA's APIs and plugin architecture, you can add new functionality, manipulate data and integrate JIRA with legacy applications and version control systems such as Subversion, CVS, Perforce, ClearCase, Visual Source Safe and others. JIRA's also Web service enabled for programmatic control with external applications using SOAP, XML-RPC and REST interfaces.
Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity
When network or server failures occur, developers can continue working. When connectivity is restored, recovery happens automatically, without any administrator intervention. This ensures zero loss of data, and no lost development time, while eliminating the risk of human error in a disaster recovery scenario.
Easy Installation and Administration
JIRA MultiSite is low maintenance, and easy to install and administer. Replication is automatic, and transactional consistency is guaranteed across all JIRA MultiSite installations.

System Requirements for JIRA MultiSite
JIRA MultiSite runs with just about any database and is web-based, so it can be accessed anytime from anywhere. A J2SE 1.5 or above compliant Java runtime environment is required in the server environment where JIRA MultiSite is installed at each location. Linux, Unix and Windows operating systems are supported.

JIRA MultiSite is sold exclusively by WANdisco through an OEM arrangement with Atlassian Software Systems Pty Ltd.
